The Art of Dying: Stories of the End of Life Journeys

The Archbishop James M. Hayes Centre for Pastoral Care and Pastoral Theology presents a series of events about The Art of Dying: Stories of the End of Life Journeys, beginning with Prophetic Witness: Accompaniment. Presented by: Sister Dr. Nuala Kenny, OC, BA, MD, FRCP(C).

The Art of Dying and Stories of Sickness, Suffering and Death

The medieval ars moriendi, the Christian art of dying, assisted individuals and communities to live in preparation for sudden death. As with all arts and crafts, it was learned in study, from mentors, and through experience. Excellence in the art was shared in stories. In our death-denying, death-defying, and death-controlled culture with its belief in technology as the answer to all our needs and wants, disciples of Christ face new challenges.

In this reflection, we will utilize the power of stories and narrative knowing to provide meaning, context and perspective for an art of dying for our time. Rooted in the Gospel stories of Jesus’ life, suffering, death and resurrection, we will explore experiences of patients, families and caregivers who are living the challenges of a good death in the post-Christian and highly technology-dependent world in which we live. Aware of the vulnerability inherent in illness and dependence, we will re-claim the duty of all the baptized to care for the suffering in our midst.

The presentation will be on Wednesday, May 16 at St. Coloumba Chapel on the AST Campus.
