Partnership

Who are we, and what do we do?

The Archdiocese of Halifax-Yarmouth has a long-established history of fostering faith formation and evangelization, facilitating opportunities to know and experience Christ, and helping those in need. The initiatives undertaken by the Archdiocese have had a long-standing and wide-reaching impact on our communities since 1817. To continue achieving these goals, the Archdiocese of Halifax-Yarmouth seeks partnerships with organizations that share our vision.

Project List

* Daily Bread Food Outreach

The Daily Bread Outreach has been operating out of St. Mary's Cathedral Basilica for around 20 years but has served in Halifax for over 70 years. On an average week, the outreach provides food, seasonally appropriate clothing and footwear, and essential resources to between 350 and 400 people experiencing food insecurity and poverty. For many of those served, the outreach is a lifeline and guaranteed means of support when their lives are anything but stable. If your organization is committed to serving individuals experiencing poverty and food insecurity in Halifax, we would love to hear from you.

* The Emergency Shelters Project

The Emergency Shelter project was created with the aim of establishing temporary emergency shelters located on parish properties; however, due to the increasing number of people experiencing homelessness, the project continues, and the shelters were retrofitted with heating and cooling systems for year-round living. Our project seeks to help people attain emergency shelter but also works with them to attain benefits, support, and, ultimately, long-term housing. The housing crisis in Halifax continues to worsen, and we are looking for partners ready to help respond to the dire situations faced by those experiencing homelessness.

* Holy Cross Chaplaincy

Holy Cross Chaplaincy is a Catholic chaplaincy dedicated to helping students navigate their lives on campus. HCC is a place where people can gather to discern their call to holiness and mission freely. We support our students spiritually, socially, and sacramentally and are dedicated to forming them to become a community of Christian believers. With your help, Holy Cross Chaplaincy can continue to make a difference in the lives of post-secondary students across the diocese.

* The Community Collection

Every year, The Archdiocese of Halifax-Yarmouth takes up a collection to support retired and infirmed priests in our care. Currently, we provide support for 16 priests, offering them a living allowance and a retirement health plan. Also, we subsidize three churches that have priests residing in their rectories, amounting to an annual expenditure of 176,000. This amounts to a cost of $176,000 annually. As we continue to serve those who served us, we are actively seeking partners looking to help make a difference in the lives of retired and infirmed priests.

* The Formation Collection

A vocation is how and where God calls us to live our life. We often equate vocations with becoming a priest or sister, but these are not the only ways God calls us to serve. God has given us each a vocation. Our role is to discern this call and figure out how best to worship and serve God in our day-to-day lives. Facilitating formative opportunities to experience and know Christ is an important part of the lives of all believers. By partnering with us, your organization can play a vital role in this important and life-changing ministry. If your organization is motivated to help facilitate these formative experiences, we encourage you to apply.

* The Mission Collection

The value of mission holds three important facets within it: proclamation of the Gospel, ministry to those in need, and reliance on the Holy Spirit. Thus, the interconnections between evangelization and charity are present within our diocesan church.

If we have learned anything in the past few years, it is that those who are the most vulnerable in our communities need our support now more than ever. While many are without homes in Nova Scotia, many more are presented with the impossible choice of spending what little they have on shelter, food or medications.

The Archdiocese supports many different ministries which support people experiencing homelessness, including but not limited to Hope Cottage, St. Vincent de Paul Society, The Daily Bread Outreach, Inn from the Cold (Kentville), and other ministry programs throughout the Archdiocese. If your organization is motivated to help our people experiencing poverty, homelessness, and food insecurity, please consider applying.

* Steubenville Atlantic

The Steubenville Youth Conferences, an outreach of the Franciscan University of Steubenville, are a series of 25 conferences across North America that help teens encounter the love of Christ every summer. Our mission is to build the Church by evangelizing, equipping, and empowering God's children to become radical and joyful disciples.

Steubenville Atlantic, Canada's first Steubenville Youth Conference, is presented in partnership with the Archdiocese of Halifax-Yarmouth and the Franciscan University of Steubenville. The event is held annually in Halifax, Nova Scotia. With your organization's help, the Archdiocese of Halifax-Yarmouth can continue to facilitate formative faith-building opportunities and inspire the next generation of believers.

* The Marriage Tribunal

The Marriage Tribunal Ministry seeks to reach out to divorced people in an effort to help heal their wounds while affirming its teaching of marriage, which is a lifetime, exclusive and permanent relationship between a man and a woman. From their union, they bring forth and raise children. Marriage, according to the Church's understanding, is a sacred bond and a covenant of love in which Christ confirms the union of the couple with his love. The Marriage Tribunal undertakes vital work that makes a meaningful difference in the lives of people going through divorce. This work is made possible through the generosity of our supporters.

* Catholic Cemeteries

The Catholic cemetery is a sacred place; it is a holy ground where our faithful who have departed await the resurrection to eternal life. It is our obligation, as a sign of respect for the departed and their loved ones, to make cemetery grounds as attractive as possible. The special reverence we show for the departed and the places where they rest serve as a reminder of our hope to joyfully reunite with them when we are with the Lord forever. In the Halifax area, the Catholic Cemeteries of Halifax are responsible for three cemeteries: the Gate of Heaven, Holy Cross, and Mount Olivet. If your organization is interested in helping to support the departed and their families by reverently upkeeping cemeteries, please fill out an application.

Your organization can become a financial partner with the Archdiocese of Halifax-Yarmouth, which is crucial to the success of its ministries. Partnering in this manner can take the form of gift matching for collections, donation of stocks or mutual funds, or simply a financial contribution or grant to a cause that resonates with your organization. What is a Partnership?

A partnership is a mutually beneficial relationship between a non-profit and a for-profit organization. Partnerships are formalized through a memorandum of understanding, which is an agreement between two or more parties outlined in a formal document. It is not necessarily legally binding, which depends on the signatories' intent and the language in the agreement, but signals the willingness of the parties to collaborate.

The benefits of partnering with the Archdiocese of Halifax-Yarmouth

According to a government census from 2021, 245,305 individuals in Nova Scotia stated that they identify as Catholic. The Catholic church in Nova Scotia has served communities across Nova Scotia since 1817, which has created widespread organizational awareness. The Archdiocese of Halifax-Yarmouth is partnering with and supporting a number of non-profits such as the Daily Bread Outreach, St. Vincent De Paul Society, Inn from the Cold, Hope Cottage, and numerous outreaches operated by parishes across the diocese. That being said, partnering with us has the potential to generate significant exposure for your organization. This exposure can be amplified by the social impact we, with your assistance, can have on communities in Nova Scotia. Partnering with us can also help your organization bolster its corporate social responsibility. Exposure opportunities are facilitated by posting your organization's name, logo,  and the project or appeal contributed to on the archdiocesan website, social media accounts, and external news service. Partners will be provided with collection or program reports, which your organization can use to demonstrate the social impact of your investment to stakeholders.
