The Human Resources office assists the Archdiocese in developing and maintaining a wholesome and healthy workplace for all who work together to further the mission of the Archdiocese of Halifax-Yarmouth. The Human Resources office is responsible for developing and updating policies and procedures affecting lay employees of the Archdiocese, both in parishes and at the Pastoral and Administration offices. Human Resources assists in the recruitment and selection of personnel at the Pastoral and Administrative offices and advises pastors and other administrative staff on recruitment, selection, employee relations, performance management, training and development and organizational development matters at the parish level. Human Resources also provides pay and benefits for the Pastoral and Administrative staff as well as a number of parishes, cleric, deacons, and staff of the archdiocese.

On Thursday last week, the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) released a new document titled: Protecting Minors from Sexual Abuse: A call to the Catholic Faithful for Healing, Reconciliation, and Transformation. The 200 page document issues guidelines that aim to ensure that every Roman Catholic diocese across Canada develops strict protocols to safeguard minors and assist victims that come forward.

In addition, the candidate will provide the menu planning and ingredients for the weekend meals. In a typical week, the incumbent works 30 hours per week.

The successful candidate will bring to the role:

  • Red Seal certification in cooking and 2 years experience or the equivalency of training and experience
  • Prior experience in the preparation of a wide variety of meals including meals for individuals with dietary restrictions
  • A current Safe Food Handling Certificate
  • Grocery budget management experience
  • current Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) and Standard First Aid training

Stella Maris Parish is seeking for an experience and reliable Administrative Assistant who will be representation of our parish community, which strives to be a community of Christian faith, hope and love. Reporting to the Parish Operations Manager and the pastor’s assistant, this role requires friendliness, compassion and organization skills as well as empathy and discretion are important as this role is privy to confidential or personal information regarding staff and parishioners

The main duties and responsibilities are:

Communication:

  • Greet and welcome visitors in a positive, courteous and helpful manner
  • Monitor and respond to email requests sent to the parish general email accounts
  • Respond to phone calls and keep a phone log, actioning as much as possible 
  • Update the parish website as required, including the online parish calendar
  • Administer the Mass Intentions process, stock and prepare mass cards
  • Prepare, print, post and send the weekly bulletin and mass announcements (which includes monitoring of diocesan news for content)
  • Administer our MailChimp account used for large volume communications
  • Provide administrative support to the Parish Leadership Team

Administration:

  • Order and receive office supplies
  • Collect and distribute mail
  • Ensure functioning of office equipment (photocopier, printer, telephone)
  • Develop and maintain a volunteer team to assist and provide routine administrative support

Parish Records:

  • Maintain the parish directory using Parish Friendly software, keep the directory up-to-date as well as data entry of donations for tax receipt purposes
  • Maintain the records for Baptism, First Communion, Confirmation, Marriage, Funeral and Death; prepare all certificates and respond to requests for information and certificates
  • Maintain and keep all sacramental record books up to date
  • Compile the yearly statistics report for the Archdiocese
  • Record keeping and administration for all cemeteries which includes the columbarium

The ideal candidate should have:

  • Grade 12 plus completion of an office administration or secretarial diploma or certification
  • Minimum 5 years experience in a secretarial/front office role
  • Active participation in a Christian faith community with experience as a volunteer in that community
  • Demonstrated above average written and oral communication skills with the ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality
  • Strong organizational and planning skills and the ability to prioritize and work well in a multi-task environment and as part of a team with the ability to shift smoothly between and among different initiatives
  • Able to demonstrate experience working with different communication media (ie. MailChimp, phone system, office suite software programs, website editing/publishing, social media posting)
  • Creative in solving problems

Saint Benedict Parish is seeking for a reliable Youth Ministry Coordinator. The Youth Ministry Coordinator at SBP has a passion and a desire to lead teens to discover Jesus, form them to become missionary disciples, and equip them to go out and transform the world. They understand that our teens are an integral part of our parish community.

The Youth Ministry Coordinator will be responsible for leading a team made up of volunteer parishioners who are trained and entrusted youth leaders to support The Rise, Youth Alpha, and our SBP group participating in the Steubenville Atlantic Conference (chaperones).

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ongoing recruiting, training, and managing of The Rise team of youth leaders for Thursday nights.
  • Creating ways to reach teens in our parish and beyond who are not yet engaged with youth ministry.

Saint Benedict Parish is seeking for a reliable Music Coordinator. The Music Coordinator at SBP has a passion to lead people into worshiping God through the gift of music. They understand that music can be both a form of praising God and an experience of God’s love for us. They will create opportunities for people to encounter God through many different styles of music that we value at SBP, including contemporary and traditional.

The Music Coordinator will be responsible for leading a team made up of volunteer parishioners who are trained and entrusted musicians and worship leaders to oversee 3 main areas: supporting weekend Mass music ministries, special events (Alpha, Proclaim, Gregorian Prayer Night, Parish Mission, etc.), and occasional weekday Mass music ministries.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ongoing recruiting, training, and managing of the SBP contemporary choir on Saturdays at 4pm, working alongside the main coordinator, Kim Sampson.
  • Ongoing recruiting, training, and managing of the SBP worship bands on Sundays at 9am and 11:30am, working alongside the main coordinator, Phil Marmen.

Immaculate Conception Parish includes the Churches of Immaculate Conception, Truro; Sacred Heart, Millbrook; St Michaels, Brule; St Kateri Tekakwitha, Indian Brook; and St Bridget, Shubenacadie. As the parish reorganizes to meet the needs of our parish community, it has been identified that new and renewed approaches need constant assessment. Servicing a predominantly rural area requires an approach that will include family catechesis, community outreach and creativity in delivering professional and dynamic programming in the role of Evangelization Coordinator.

Summary:

The Evangelization Coordinator will be responsible for providing leadership and communications to reach parishioners, newcomers and the unchurched. Leadership will involve new and existing initiatives together with volunteers. Some initiatives have already been started like Alpha, Small Groups, and volunteer formation. Communications will involve print, social media, website, etc. to establish our church as a positive presence for Christian caring, sharing, and witnessing of the Gospel in our communities.

Main duties and Responsibilities:

    1. Ongoing recruiting, training, and providing of evangelistic guidance to other ministries.
    2. Coordinating and executing special events for Evangelization. This may include Alpha, leadership events among staff and volunteers, parish events like Praise and Worship evenings, guest speakers, Diocesan programs and events, etc.
    3. Demonstrate excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, to enhance promotion and engagement in all evangelization events, including writing of bulletin announcements, social media and website content.
    4. Promote and organize Small Groups.
    5. This work may require work from home, a combination of daytime office presence, multi-church visits, evenings or weekends.
  • Collaborate with our full-time Office Administrator and involve supporting ministries.
  • Common point of contact for in-person, Flocknote and telephone inquiries regarding Evangelization.
  • Establish an outreach plan that will enhance our parish community presence by way of invitation, welcome and inspiration of Gospel and Catholic family values.

Qualifications:

Job Description:

Accountability: The Archives Outreach Assistant directly reports to the Archivist

Summary:

Through a government student grant program, the Archdiocese of Halifax-Yarmouth is looking to hire an Archives Outreach Assistant with us for a 10 weeks placement starting April until the end of August. In keeping with the government grant, applicants must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or have refugee status in Canada, legally entitled to work in Canada and must be between the ages of 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the work assignment. The successful candidate must be able to commit to the full duration of the work assignment.

This position is ideally suited for a student with an interest in Library and Information Sciences, Religious Studies, History, Sociology, creative writing, or other Humanities. The student will be working in a faith-based environment and must possess a well-rounded knowledge of and respect for the teachings and structure of the Roman Catholic Church. The candidate need not be a practicing Roman Catholic.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The student will research and create a brief biography of at least one of our former Archbishops to be uploaded to our website. This will include scans of documents and/or photographs from our collection related to his life and tenure as Archbishop of Halifax. Our first 5 Archbishops have already been profiled, so this project will continue that trajectory, creating a biography of the Most Rev. Cornelius O’Brien. Archbishop O’Brien was the first Canadian born Bishop of Halifax, and was instrumental in the establishment and support of many institutions that were foundational to the growth of Halifax and beyond with a particular interest in education. As such, a biography of this Bishop will be of interest to readers in the wider community.

If time permits, the student will also create biographical sketch of the Most Rev. Edward J. McCarthy, who was the Archbishop of Halifax during World War I. That alone makes his episcopacy one of interest to researchers.

In consultation with the Archivist and the Chancellor, the student will be encouraged to explore our holdings in order to created other content for the Archives webpage, drawing from items and material in our collection.

Summary:

Through a government student grant program, the Archdiocese of Halifax-Yarmouth is looking to hire an HR Project Coordinator with us for a placement starting June until the end of August. The H.R. Project Coordinator will work with the Archdiocesan Human Resources team to provide administrative, project management, event, and training coordination.

In keeping with the government grant, applicants must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or have refugee status in Canada, legally entitled to work in Canada and must be between the ages of 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the work assignment. The successful candidate must be able to commit to the full duration of the work assignment (summer through the end of August).

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Proficient in MS Office suite of products including data base administration

Summary:

Through a government student grant program, the Archdiocese of Halifax-Yarmouth is looking to hire two (2) Groundworkers for our Catholic cemeteries with us for a 8 weeks placement starting July until the end of August. The Cemetery Groundworker is responsible for the maintenance for the three Catholic cemeteries in the Halifax Regional Municipality according to operational standards, specifications, policies and provincial legislation.

In keeping with the government grant, applicants must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or have refugee status in Canada, legally entitled to work in Canada and must be between the ages of 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the work assignment. The successful candidate must be able to commit to the full duration of the work assignment.

Work Location:

Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Mount Olivet Cemetery, and Holy Cross Cemetery

Duties and Responsibilities:

The maintenance and operations activities of the three catholic cemeteries including but not limited to:

  • Landscaping, maintenance of cemetery grounds including clean up of grounds, mowing and trimming of lawns, trees and shrubs.
  • Report any ground holes, depressions and fallen headstones to the Cemetery Grounds Operation Supervisor
  • Responsible for maintaining a work environment that is above all standards for occupational health and workplace safety.

Position Relationships:

The Groundworker will work as a member of a team of maintenance employees. The Groundworker may at times work side by side with contractors, and/or service providers.

Physical, Mental and Visual Demands:

  • Bending; frequent kneeling, squatting; stooping; twisting, crouching
  • Extensive walking and standing; frequent walking on rough surfaces
  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs
  • Majority of work is performed outside in a variety of weather conditions
  • Stress related to the type of work environment

Qualifications:

  • Education: minimum Grade 10
  • Applicants must be between 15-30 years at the start of the employment

  • Experience in a grounds maintenance environment

The Cathedral Assistant & Guide will lead several guided tours daily, pointing out architectural features, historic and artistic features, elements which reflect tenets of faith, and the ways that Saint. Mary's Cathedral Basilica has played a role in the development of Halifax and of Canada.

In keeping with the government grant, applicants must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or have refugee status in Canada, legally entitled to work in Canada and must be between the ages of 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the work assignment. The successful candidate must be able to commit to the full duration of the work assignment (summer through the end of August) and have been a full-time student in the past semester and planning to return to full time studies in the fall.

Main duties and Responsibilities:

(main functions but not limited to the following)

  • Student will spend a significant portion of the day staffing the Cathedral Information Booth, which is located at the entrance to the building. They will be available here for tourists who visit the historic site. When not engaged with the visitors, they will ensure the booth is fully stocked with pamphlets.
  • Student will be the primary contact with workers and other professionals who come to work on the building during the restoration process. Safety equipment and training will be provided if ever necessary
  • Student will learn how to assist with the building's various public services and ceremonies during the week. They will be taught how to prepare, conduct and clean up for each event. They will be supported and supervised by staff to ensure quality community access.
  • Student will be provided with the necessary tools to coordinate and offer a guided building tour. They will learn the building's history and approved tour script but be confident enough to communicate the information to the visitors.
  • Student is responsible for opening and locking the Cathedral. They will be guided on how to properly and safely open and close/secure the Cathedral building daily for public access

Qualifications:

  • Must meet the requirements of grant application details
  • Background in the theory and practice of tourism and hospitality
  • Comfortable speaking about their relationship with Christ
  • Adaptability, critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication skills (oral and written)
  • Exceptional planning and organizational skills
  • Experience working effectively as part of a team
  • Strong background and skills in coordination and planning, is results-driven
  • Experience working in a parish would be considered an asset
  • Knowledge or education in history of the Cathedral and Archdiocese would be considered an asset
  • Experience working with the public and/or speaking in front of groups of people would be considered a strong asset.
