Over the past two years, The Catholic Conference of Canadian Bishops (CCCB) have been working in each diocese to create space for listening and dialogue with Indigenous peoples across Canada. The Bishops of Canada have sought to hear their stories and build bridges that could lead to authentic healing and reconciliation. As part of this endeavor, the CCCB is in the final stages of planning to bring a delegation of indigenous people and bishops to meet with the Pope Francis.
Last week they released a statement that in part read:
“In conversation with Indigenous people and communities, both at the local and national levels, and bilaterally with the First Nations, Métis and Inuit national organizations, the Bishops, sponsors of this project, have been preparing, for over two years now, a delegation of Indigenous people to meet with the Holy Father to foster meaningful encounters of dialogue and healing.”
The visit to the Vatican had been postposed as a result of the global pandemic. The CCCB are committed to making the visit before the end of 2021 while taking into account all COVID – 19 travel restrictions.
