The proceeds of the World Mission Sunday collection provides the bulk of the funding for emerging churches. Through our generosity, great work is being done for the Church in need in the global South -- our brothers and sisters in Christ. And this year is the one hundredth anniversary of World Mission Sunday! We can look back with gratitude on the good fruit that has been produced over the last one hundred years, and look ahead with faith at what will be accomplished. World Mission Sunday is an initiative of the Pontifical Missions Society.
This year’s theme (Pope Leo’s first) is “One in Christ, United in Mission.” The funds we raise support new and struggling churches, providing essential resources for church construction, for pastoral care and catechesis, for schools and hospitals. This is important work that has been given to us! But last year, the contribution of our diocese was the lowest in Canada. Surely, we can do better, especially as we celebrate this important anniversary!
